PREVIOUS OIA PRESENTATIONS
Since Puerto Rico is one of the prime locations for OTEC implementation, due to the relative proximity of deep ocean water to the shore, particularly in areas such as Maunabo, Yabucoa and Patillas, OIA has undertaken special efforts to communicate the potential benefits of OTEC to the Puerto Rican public. Multiple informational activities have been undertaken.
The first was held at the College of Professional Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (CIAPR) on August, 2006. Due to the extreme interest raised by the first activity, followup conferences were held on May, 2007 at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus (UPR-RUM) and again at the College of Professional Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico. All OIA Puerto Rico conferences were recognized as valid for continuing education credits by the CIAPR Professional Development Division.
Photos from the 2007 conferences are presented below. OIA thanks and deeply values the collaboration from faculty members at UPR-RUM, particularly that of the Marine Sciences and Mechanical Engineering Departments, and from the staff and officers of CIAPR.

On April 24, 2008, OIA was invited to present on OTEC by the Caribbean chapter of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). The event, held at the College of Professional Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (CIAPR) was attended by a standing room only audience. José A. Martí, Manuel A. J. Laboy and Thomas Plocek provided attendees with basic information on OTEC and its potential for implementation in Puerto Rico. Click here for links to the presentations.

On May 23, 2008, José A. Martí provided a presentation on OTEC to the annual meeting of the Puerto Rico Water and Environment Association (PRWEA), held in Rio Grande Puerto Rico. The presentation proved to be a hit with the audience. After the presentation, Mr. Martí was interviewed on air by Susan Soltero, a radio and television personality, who had learned about OTEC from the OIA video, which is presently circulating in the Internet. Click here for a link to the presentation.
On June 18, 2008, Thomas Plocek and José A. Martí presented a paper on the environmental, social and economic implications of the commercial implementation of OTEC in Puerto Rico at the International Conference on Green Communities sponsored by the International Center for Cooperation in Engineering and Sciences (COHEMIS) at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. OIA extends its appreciation to Dr. Fernando Gilbes and the rest of the COHEMIS conference organizers for this unique opportunity. Click here for a link to the presentation.
On August 8, 2008, OIA delivered the keynote technical session for the Puerto Rico Institute of Electrical Engineers at the Annual Meeting of College of Professional Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (CIAPR).
