OIA AT WASHINGTON INTERNATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY CONFERENCE
OIA provided a presentation on OTEC at the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference (WIREC), an international event attended by over 2,800 delegates from 119 countries, along with nearly 3,000 other participants. OIA's presentation, facilitated by the Ocean Energy Council, was selected as an Official Side Event for WIREC.

On WIREC:
Hosted by the United States Government, in cooperation with the American Council On Renewable Energy, WIREC 2008 is the third global ministerial-level conference on renewable energy, following events in Beijing in 2005 and Bonn in 2004. Since the close of the Beijing conference, worldwide enthusiasm for renewable energy has increased dramatically, and production has soared. The global community fully recognizes the imperative to promote widespread adoption of renewable energies such as biofuels, wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower.
At WIREC, government officials and energy experts from around
the world discussed ways their countries could develop renewable energy, promote
sustainable development, and reduce greenhouse emissions. Countries,
sub-national authorities, private-sector and non-government organizations made
more than 100 pledges of concrete ways to meet enhanced energy goals.
President George W. Bush addressed the ministers attending WIREC and laid out
the U.S. strategy for reducing oil use in America and discussed current
initiatives to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy use. President
Bush announced the U.S. commitment of $2 billion over the next three years to
create an international clean energy technology fund that would help developing
countries finance renewable energy projects. The U.S. government-the single
greatest energy consumer in the world- pledged that 7.5 percent of its electric
energy use will come from renewable resources by 2013.
The OIA Presentation:
The OIA presentation, titled "Oceans of Energy: Ocean Thermal Energy- True Baseload Renewable Energy plus Desalinated Water" was presented on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, as a WIREC Official Side Event, with the collaboration of the Ocean Energy Council.

The event, attended by a standing room only audience, aimed at providing a description of the wide geographical distribution of the huge Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Resource and how it can converted to electricity with the possible simultaneous generation of fresh water. The technical advances that make OTEC commercially viable now and potential future developments in ammonia production from open ocean plant-ships, were discussed. In addition, the potential for food, biofuels and chemicals from the deep ocean water discharge associated to OTEC were covered. Presenters included Richard Meyer, President of the Ocean Energy Council and Thomas J. Plocek, Founder of OIA.
